The PostBus drops you off in the heart of the Vergeletto Valley, where the first forest reserve in the Ticino was created in 1992. After a short walk along the narrow road on the valley floor, you will catch sight of the beautiful summer settlement of Pièi.
Behind it, the path continues but from here it is unclear how it can overcome the crags above. Undoubtedly, it is a steep climb. Halfway up, at Alpe del Pianaccio, is a small clearing for a well-deserved break, then another zig-zag climb up to Alpe di Ribia. The numerous ruins surrounding the hut suggest that, in ancient times, it must have been a valuable pasture. Today it is nothing more than a peaceful, wide sunny basin—a gently sloping arena: the complete opposite of the slopes you passed on your way up. Those who wish to go a little further may visit the Piròi plateau with its pools, perhaps for a dip.
